Funny Wedding Vow

Consider Traditional First

Before you consider writing a funny wedding vow, be sure you're willing to give up the more traditional vows, which generations of couples have used before you.

Because many faiths have their own version of vows (see “Religious Wedding Vows”), members of your audience may expect you to repeat those. In fact, many people who attend weddings agree silently repeat the vows as you speak, as a way to reconfirm their commitments.

So, knowing your guests, consider whether it may be disappointing to them if you move toward humorous rather than traditional vows. However, having said that ...

... Writing a Funny Wedding Vow

Funny wedding vows may be the great solution for a casual wedding, one that is purposely designed to avoid formality and stiffness. They may not be for everyone, but you can sure your guests will remember your wedding for years to come.

If you and your future partner have really good senses of humor, you may add some funny lines to your ceremony. Needless to say that isn’t appropriate for a very formal wedding (they can be used at the reception, however, even if you have a formal wedding). But, for the more casual ceremonies, some humorous lines can spice up the event. Since marriage is such a serious commitment, adding a little humor provides a little balance.

How do you compose a funny wedding vow? Start by reading the ones in this website.

Some may work as is, but you’ll probably want to add your own anecdotes. Use a funny story, a light joke, a reference to your foibles that everyone knows about, or perhaps a quote.

One important caveat: Never, ever make fun of your partner. If you're going to make fun of someone, make fun of yourself.

Try it out on a few people to be sure it really is funny. There is nothing worse than have your attempt at humor, fall flat.

Comment on humorous events as opposed to making fun of the negatives. Include comments on activities you both enjoy.

Consider that your partner will remember these vows and should be able to enjoy them for the future years.

Often people choose to include “promises” about something. For example, a person who loves surfing the internet might promise to stop surfing in order to join the partner for meals, help with laundry, and giving affection. A promise vow assures that you will continue to laugh together in the future.
